Galaxy Evolution: an Overview
نویسنده
چکیده
We review recent ideas on the evolution of galaxies. Two models are competing to explain the observational features: the monolithic model in which galaxies assemble at high redshift, and evolve with little influence from the environment, and the hierarchical model in which small galaxies progressively assemble to form bigger objects. We describe the basic features of the model of hierarchical formation, and we try to valuate how the observations in the optical and infrared/submillimetre fit in the scenario. Finally, we show a few results from a hybrid, N– body simulation + semi–analytic model of hierarchical formation that produces detailed quantitative predictions to be compared to the data.

baryonic matter distribution in the large-scale structures is one of the main questions in cosmology. This distribution can provide valuable information regarding the processes of galaxy formation and evolution. On the other hand, the missing baryon problem is still under debate. One of the most important cosmological structures for studying the rate and the distribution of the baryons is gal...
متن کاملPulsating red giant and supergiant stars in the Local Group dwarf galaxy Andromeda I
We have conducted an optical long-term monitoring survey of the majority of dwarf galaxies in the Local Group, with the Isaac Newton Telescope (INT), to identify the long period variable (LPV) stars. LPV stars vary on timescales of months to years, and reach the largest amplitudes of their brightness variations at optical wavelengths, due to the changing temperature. They trace stellar populati...
متن کاملScaling relations in dynamical evolution of star clusters
We have carried out a series of small scale collisional N-body calculations of single-mass star clusters to investigate the dependence of the lifetime of star clusters on their initial parameters. Our models move through an external galaxy potential with a logarithmic density profile and they are limited by a cut-off radius. In order to find scaling relations between the lifetime of star cluste...
متن کاملOverview of Performance and Accuracy of Smartphone Sensors in Augmented Reality Applications
Since incorrect excavations have resulted in extensive and irreparable financial and physical losses, therefore different drillings require having accurate information about the status of the infrastructures. Ubiquitous Geospatial Information System (UBGIS) as a new generation of Geospatial Information System (GIS) can be a good solution to avoid such problems. Augmented Reality (AR) is the ne...

Introduction: In the era of increasing development of electronic technology, using technology and making favorable changes in student assessment have a prominent role. The purpose of this study was to review the evolution process of student assessment methods in medical education and report its process in Iran based on the 8-step model) In Line with the Package for Medical Sciences Assessment S...
متن کاملThe Formation and Evolution of Massive Star Clusters: Historical Overview
Some factors connecting the evolutionary histories of galaxies with the characteristics of their cluster systems are reviewed. Unanswered questions include: How is one to understand the observation that some globular cluster systems have disk kinematics whereas others do not? Why do some galaxies have cluster systems with unimodal metallicity distributions, whereas others have bimodal metallici...
